The exhibition “Nazario: art and dissidence in times of repression and liberation” opens this Thursday, May 8 at 6 pm. The event will feature the presence of artist Nazario Luque, considered the father of Spanish underground comics and one of the pioneers in the artistic representation of issues related to homosexuality, sex and gender in the format of cartoons.
Museu de Manresa hosts the exhibition “Nazario: art and dissidence in times of repression and liberation” which can be seen from May 8 to June 29 in the exhibition hall of the cloister and presents a retrospective of the work and life of Nazario Luque Vera (Castilleja del Campo, Seville, 1944) based on the social and political context that the country experienced during the 1970s (Democratic Transition), the 1980s (the AIDS crisis) until the present day. The exhibition has been organized within the framework of the collaboration with the Master’s Degree in Management and Analysis of Artistic Heritage of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Manresa Museum and curated by Laia Bové Castellví, Ainoa Llàcer Hernández and Cristina Troya Betrain.
This exhibition brings back the most transgressive Nazario, ahead of his time, who brought to the table issues that are still essential in our society today. The show incorporates original paintings, silkscreens, comics or watercolors from different funds and collections such as the National Art Collection of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Castell de Perelada Foundation, the Cerdanyola Art Museum or the personal collection of Nazario Luque, among other private funds.
The exhibition was presented to the public for the first time in July 2023 in the exhibition hall of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and for the second time at the Museu d’Art de Cerdanyola in June, last year. Now, in Manresa, the exhibition incorporates several new features such as a series of original works that illustrate the “more contemporary” facet of Nazario (the 2000s), where he interrelates with the social and cultural fabric of Barcelona. And also a polychrome carving from the Museu del Barroc de Catalunya that offers a parallel between contemporary iconography and aesthetics with Baroque art.
